Paper is a stronger material to show a dichotomous society than anything else. By cutting out this paper, a fixed dichotomous society is destroyed and takes a form of injuring me who lives in it. But another form of beauty I think shows up in the destruction. The total circulatory system, which this situation, destruction and the making of a new existence complete, is called Establishing. This work, the first step of establishing, takes a form of traditional Korean costume.
The form called Korean costume has been worn traditionally since the Chosun era. Numerous colorful painting patterns and personal thoughts in that form destroy its structure and establish themselves. The structure of the development of the Korean society of now is abnormal enough to be called Miracle on the Han River. The situation of those days says directly that Korea couldn't have developed so fast with accelerated velocity. This work is being installed, with many layers of shadows in the making. It talks about truth or falsehood. This kind of form presents a topic of conversation in the following. If so, the story goes on: whether the situation of now is real or the false in sheep's clothing tempts us.
종이는 이분법적인 사회를 보여주는 어떤 무엇보다 강한 재료입니다. 이런 종이를 잘라냄으로 일정의 이분법적 사회를 파괴하고 그 속에 살고 있는 나 자신에게 자해하는 형태를 가지게 됩니다. 하지만 그 파괴 속에 또 다른 나 자신이 생각하는 미의 형태를 나타나게 되는 것이지요. 이러한 상황, 파괴와 새로운 존재를 완성해 나가는 것, 이러한 순환구조를 통틀어 설정이라고 지었습니다. 설정의 첫 단계인 이번 작업은 한복의 형태를 가지고 있습니다.
한복이라고 불리는 형태는 대략 조선시대부터 입어온 전통복장입니다. 그 한복의 형태 속에 무수한 단청문양과 개인적인 생각들이 그 이분법적 구조를 파괴하며 자리잡고 있습니다. 지금의 한국사회의 발전 구조는 한강의 기적이라 불릴 정도로 기형적입니다. 그 당시의 상황이 그렇게 가속도가 붙으며 발전할 수 없었다는 것을 단적으로 말하고 있는 것이지요. 설정이라는 행위를 통해 기형적 발전 속에 희생된 수많은 정신들을 위로해주고 싶었습니다. 태안주변(태안설의)과 진도의 씻김굿에서는 종이를 오려 만든 부적을 통해 이러한 행위를 하고 있습니다. 하지만 근본적인 위로는 아마도 내가 받고 싶었던 것일지 모릅니다. 지금의 이 부질없는 행위들을 하는 나에게 조금의 위로를 해주고 싶었던 것일 수도 있습니다. '그동안 수고했어.'라고 말이지요. 그리고 앞으로 할 부질없는 짓이 조금은 나아지길 바라는 마음을 담아보는 것일지도 모릅니다. 현 사회의 기형적 구조의 대표적 희생자들인 문화계의 소외계층, 그중의 IMF세대 중의 하나인 나에게, 그리고 나와 비슷한 삶을 살아가는 이들에게 위로를 하는 것일지도 모릅니다. 이 작업의 설치는 다층의 그림자가 형성되게 만들어집니다. 이는 허와 실의 문제를 이야기 합니다. 이와 같은 형태를 통해 다음 이야기의 화두를 제시합니다. 그렇다면 지금의 상황이 진짜인지, 아니면 혹 허상이 실제의 모습으로 우리를 현혹하는 것은 아닌지에 대한 이야기입니다.
