나는 오랜 시간 동안 사회적으로 널리 알려진 이미지와 상징을 차용하여, 본인의 작업 방식을 통해 새로운 의미를 환기시키는 데 집중해왔다. 대중적 이미지의 재해석과 전유를 통해, 집단적 기억과 사회적 인식의 층위를 탐구하는 것이 주요한 작업의 축이었다.

이번 연작은 이러한 기존의 방법론과는 본질적으로 결을 달리한다. 나는 더 이상 익숙한 이미지를 차용하지 않는다. 오히려, 누구도 본 적 없는, 존재하지만 비가시적 현상을 조각이라는 입체적 매체로 형상화하고자 한다. 이는 보편적 시각 경험의 바깥에 있는 이미지를 창조하는 시도이다.

본 작업은 특정 소리의 파형(waveform)과 진동 패턴을 3차원적 형태로 구현하는 시도이다. 각 조각은 소리의 파동이 공간을 진동시키는 순간의 에너지와 리듬, 그리고 그 여운을 물성으로 고정한다. 이를 통해 관람자는 소리의 시각적 흔적을 마주하며, 평소 인지하지 못했던 비가시적 세계에 대한 사유의 계기를 갖게 된다.

이번 연작은 널리 알려진 이미지의 차용에서 벗어나, 보이지 않는 것을 형상화하는 데 그 의미가 있다. 소리의 파동이 가진 유동성과 비물질성, 그리고 순간성을 조각의 물성 안에 담아내고자 한다. 이는 단순한 형태의 변환을 넘어, ‘존재하지만 보이지 않는 것’에 대한 탐구이자, 감각의 경계를 확장하는 실험이다. 이 지점에서 이전의 작업에서 보여주고 했던 색즉시공과 조우하고 있기도 하다. 조각의 표면에는 소리의 진폭, 주기, 강약이 물리적으로 새겨지며, 이는 곧 소리의 시간적 흐름이 공간적 구조로 전환되는 과정이다.

소리를 형상화하는 이 연작은, 우리가 일상에서 지나치는 수많은 ‘보이지 않는 것들’에 대한 인식의 전환을 촉구한다. 소리는 사라지지만, 그 흔적은 공간과 기억 속에 남는다. 나는 이 작업을 통해, 감각의 한계를 넘어 존재의 본질에 다가가고자 한다. 조각이 된 소리의 파동은, 우리에게 보이지 않는 세계의 깊이와 넓이를 다시금 환기시킨다.

이 연작은 단순히 소리를 시각화하는 데 그치지 않는다. 그것은 보이지 않는 것을 돌아보고, 그 존재의 의미를 새롭게 사유하는 시간과 공간을 제공한다. 관람자는 조각 앞에서 자신의 내면과 주변의 비가시적 현상들에 대해 성찰하게 된다. 나는 이 과정을 통해, 예술이 감각의 경계를 확장하고, 존재의 다층적 의미를 탐구하는 장이 되기를 바란다.

이번 연작은, 익숙한 이미지의 차용에서 미지의 이미지의 창조로의 전환이자, 보이지 않는 세계를 시각적으로 경험하게 하는 새로운 예술적 실험이다.

For many years, my practice has centered on appropriating widely recognized images and symbols, recontextualizing them through my own methods to evoke new meanings. The reinterpretation and re-appropriation of popular imagery have served as primary axes in my exploration of the strata of collective memory and social perception.

This new series marks a fundamental departure from my previous methodologies. I no longer appropriate the familiar. Instead, I seek to render, through the sculptural medium, phenomena that exist yet remain invisible—images that lie outside the realm of universal visual experience. This is an attempt to create forms that have never been seen before.

 

This body of work endeavors to manifest the waveforms and vibrational patterns of specific sounds as three-dimensional forms. Each sculpture captures the energy, rhythm, and lingering resonance of a sound wave as it vibrates through space, fixing these ephemeral qualities into a tangible material presence. Through this process, the viewer encounters the visual trace of sound, prompting reflection on the invisible worlds that often escape our everyday perception.

 

The significance of this series lies in its departure from the appropriation of familiar imagery, focusing instead on giving form to the unseen. My aim is to encapsulate the fluidity, immateriality, and transience of sound waves within the physicality of sculpture. This endeavor extends beyond mere formal transformation; it is an inquiry into that which exists yet remains unseen, and an experiment in expanding the boundaries of sensory experience. In this respect, the work resonates with the Buddhist concept of śūnyatā (emptiness), which has informed my previous projects.

 

The surfaces of these sculptures are inscribed with the physical manifestations of amplitude, frequency, and dynamics—translating the temporal flow of sound into spatial structures. This process embodies the conversion of auditory phenomena into a tangible, spatial language.

 

By materializing sound, this series invites a paradigm shift in our awareness of the countless “invisible things” that permeate daily life. While sound itself dissipates, its traces persist in space and memory. Through this work, I aspire to transcend the limits of perception and approach the essence of being. The sculpted waveforms serve as a reminder of the depth and breadth of the unseen world.

 

This series is not merely an exercise in visualizing sound. Rather, it offers an opportunity to reflect upon the invisible, providing a space and time for renewed contemplation of existence. Standing before these sculptures, viewers are encouraged to reflect on both their inner worlds and the intangible phenomena that surround them. Through this process, I hope that art can serve as a site for expanding sensory boundaries and probing the multilayered meanings of existence.
